Spotted on broadway part two..the sequel

Today after picking up some new non-slip work shoes, I saw a bulldog riding a skateboard! The little furball had their front legs on the board and was cruising along next to their human lady.

    The Bare Necessities

In this on the go life I live, I’ve come to appreciate several things that help make the days go by smoothly. I don’t always end up at my own home at night.

    1. Wisp disposable toothbrushes. This doesn’t need an explanation, unless you never realized that the opposite sex can smell what you ate/drank/whatever last night.

    2. Smartphone. If you end up separated from your car or rideless and a taxi ride is too expensive to justify, you’re going to have to bus it. Do you have the bus routes and times memorized? If not, you’ll want the internet to look that up.

    3. Pocket size phone charger. This seems like a no-brainer, but how often do you leave the house with one? With the high battery consumption of a smartphone, an item like this is becoming more and more useful to have. You might not make it home tonight to charge your shit and get that hot person’s text or call tomorrow.

    4. Earbud headphones. This goes back to the hypothetical bus ride. Nobody wants to hear your phone blasting Lady Gaga. #imjustsayin

    5. Condom(s). Come on now, let’s not rely on the other hot people of the world to be this smart.

If it looks like this list is mostly for guys, well maybe it is. After all, you chicks carry around your purses with all sorts of shit in it already. Us guys just have our pockets.

It sucks when work schedules a meeting for a job that isn’t that deep. Then calls the night before to tell you the meeting time is rescheduled for 3 pm instead of 1:30 pm. Thanks work, it isn’t like I had any important plans or anything. I do have a date tomorrow, but luckily circumstance has it that this meeting won’t interfere entirely.

I have always had a longing for the ocean and open seas, and yet I do not fully understand why.  This emotion is present throughout many members of humankind though, whether it be a wish to sail the open seas, or to lay on the beach, tanning and listening to the waves.

    But why?

Sailing can offer a sense of adventure, no doubt, and many will claim they go to a beach for tanning and possible social encounters.  Neither of these truly fit my longing for the ocean.  It is more of an instinctual impulse, a deep seeded want to not necessarily live beside crystalline waters, but to live in them.

I watched a video on Facebook today that deeply stirred this desire, along with the calming effect the music had.  The video itself is found at this link: http://vimeo.com/5606758.  At first all I saw was a really big, beautiful aquarium, but as I watched it I began to see a beauty within the beauty.  Something inside of me wanted to live among the animals, endlessly swimming in the gorgeous water.  And not necessarily as a human.

I know that might sound weird, so I will explore something you may or may not find even more weird, but explains why I may feel this way.  Bare with me.  If you already know all about the theories of evolution and common ancestry, and what those mean about human ancestry, you can skip the next paragraph.

According to scientific research, all life on earth originated in the ocean.  In short, over the billions of years after the ocean became habitable for the first lifeforms, plant-like organisms released oxygen as a byproduct of photosynthesis.  This oxygen floated up into the atmosphere, paving the way for organisms to eventually leave the water and live on land.  Thus, as evolution took its course (as it still does today, even within the human race), many seafaring animals developed lungs and limbs making them suitable for a move completely out of the oceans.  Yes, humans evolved from a long chain of animals coming from fish-like organisms that branched off (through evolution) into hominids.  No, we did not evolve from monkeys or gorillas, but rather an organism or perhaps several organisms that sexually mingled to become the ancestors of all hominids.   We are the genetic cousins of gorillas, chimpanzees and monkeys, but also the descendants of fish-like creatures.

On to the main topic: genetic memories.  There is no direct, conclusive evidence to prove that organisms inherit memories through genes; nevertheless, it is an intriguing idea.  In my theory, there is a certain amount of genetic memory being passed from every sexually contributing parent to their offspring.  I can only speculate on what exactly an organism might inherit in terms of memories, however I do believe that these memories, triggered by environmental stimuli, would not necessarily bring about a mental image but rather an emotion.  Memories are intricately tied to emotions; looking at a picture or even thinking of a time from high school or from any period of childhood can bring up many emotions.  These can range from nostalgia or a longing for youth, to outright hatred, depending on experience from those periods of time.

While one could argue that I did not experience what a fish experienced billions of years ago, a person might not remember many childhood experiences, with only small portions being easily recalled.  One could conclude that on a long enough time line, only the most profound memories are easily recalled.  If all memories, genetic or otherwise are similar in structure, long-term memory loss could apply to genetically inherited memories.  Only severely profound memories from one’s ancestors, up to point at which they make babies, could be inherited and produce an emotion or reaction in organisms today.

In conclusion, the feeling of belonging I sometimes sense when thinking about the ocean, or seeing images of sea animals, could be a direct result of genetic memories passed down over billions of years, from species to species.  My distant genetic ancestor may have once looked at the ocean and longed to return to their home.

    Beach…or air conditioning???

Sure there’s the beach, but there’s also central air conditioning in my house! Kind of a stupid situation I’m in; here in San Diego we’re all waiting for summer most of the year, but now that it’s here I just feel like lazily sitting at home enjoying the a/c. WTF?

The less football oriented Ryan blog

Well hello there neighbor.  I sometimes find that the randomness in my head would make me look crazy if I posted it on Facebook.  And I certainly won’t post completely random stuff on Ryan’s Bolt Blog either.  So…..yeah, due to a moment of inspiration at Lestat’s regarding this fancy new blog, here’s a blog for that sort of thing.  Because you can be crazy and awesome on a blog and it’s ok.
